Why the John A. Merritt Classic Means More This Year
This is the first time Jackson State and Tennessee State will meet in the John A. Merritt Classic, but there may not be a more fitting matchup for a game that carries Merritt's name.
Before John A. "Big John" Merritt became a Tennessee State legend, he built a championship foundation at Jackson State. Merritt coached Jackson State for 11 seasons, compiling a 63-37-5 record and winning conference championships in 1957, 1961 and 1962.
In 1963, Merritt left Jackson for Nashville and began a 20-year run at Tennessee State that helped turn the Tigers into a national power. He went 172-33-7 at TSU.
The 2026 matchup brings Merritt's football story full circle: the two universities that defined his head-coaching career are finally meeting in the Classic that bears his name.
