Jackson State Homecoming • Thee Breakdown

FAMU arrives after a 28–27 win at Alabama State. Jackson State returns home after a 45–38 loss at Grambling. The question: can JSU finish defensively while its quarterback situation remains unresolved?

FAMU: explosive finishes

Parker and Burris can flip the game in one snap. JSU must limit yards after the catch and force sustained possessions.

JSU: run-first foundation

Pryor and the tight ends give the Tigers answers. Establish the run, protect the football and avoid empty late possessions.

Quarterback decision center

Three quarterbacks. Two JSU paths. Explore the strengths, the supporting pieces and the decision points before making your pick.

FAMU • QB

Armond Parker

Vertical-play spark

6'0" • 176 lbs • Locust Grove, Ga.

Strengths to highlight

  • Deep-ball production: 762 season passing yards and 8 passing touchdowns.
  • Big-play connection with Burris: two fourth-quarter touchdowns against Alabama State.
  • Movement threat: 49 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in the Alabama State win.
Matchup plan

JSU’s assignment: contain his escape lanes, stay connected downfield and make him earn repeated completions.

Watch point: Ball security: 5 season interceptions; pressure must come with disciplined coverage.

Passing: 762 yards • 8 TD • 5 INT • 58.23 % completions

JACKSON STATE • QB

Caron Tyler

Mobility + tight-end answers

5'10" • 185 lbs • Temecula, Calif.

Strengths to highlight

  • Run-game dimension: 67 rushing yards against Grambling.
  • Efficient stretches in relief: 6-of-10 passing for 111 yards and a touchdown.
  • Riley connection: the tight end provides an underneath and play-action answer.
Matchup plan

JSU’s path: pair Tyler’s legs with Pryor’s rushing threat, then build comfortable throws off that foundation.

Watch point: Ball security: 2 interceptions against Grambling; the late-drive finish needs improvement.

Passing: 111 yards • 1 TD • 3 INT • 50.00% completions

JACKSON STATE • QB • AVAILABILITY TBD

Jared Lockhart

Established passing rhythm

6'6" • 205 lbs • Charlotte, N.C.

Strengths to highlight

  • Passing: 1395 yards • 13 TD • 0 INT • 61.59% completions
  • Vertical ceiling: 388 passing yards and 4 passing touchdowns against Edward Waters.
  • Proven touchdown stretches: 4 passing touchdowns against Tuskegee.
Matchup plan

If available: keep the familiar passing structure, use Pryor to balance the offense and avoid asking the quarterback to carry every possession.

Watch point: Availability and starter designation remain TBD. This is a scenario, not a medical update.

Passing: 1395 yards • 13 TD • 0 INT • 61.59% completions

Ryan Lewis

Defensive coordinator / linebackers

FAMU allowed 274 rushing yards at Alabama State. The assignment against JSU: close interior lanes, account for the quarterback and force difficult passing downs.

Keys for Lewis

Fit the run without abandoning the tight ends. Win first down. Create a takeaway before homecoming momentum builds.

JACKSON STATE • DARKSIDE DEFENSE
Torenzo Quinn official athletics portrait

Torenzo Quinn

Defensive coordinator

Grambling gained 438 yards: 201 rushing and 237 passing. JSU needs better tackling, pursuit angles and coverage discipline.

Pressure without surrendering the middle

Coach Quinn has to pressure the quarterback without leaving the intermediate area open. Sending extra rushers cannot keep creating an easy escape up the middle or an uncontested throw behind the blitz.

A QB spy? Assign a linebacker or nickel defender to mirror Parker and close when he commits to running. The spy must stay under control; using one also removes a defender from another coverage or rush assignment.

A pressure package with a middle defender? Show pressure at the line, then vary who rushes and who drops. Keep an assigned linebacker or nickel near the line of scrimmage to fit an interior scramble, with separate underneath coverage protecting the intermediate windows. One defender cannot reliably handle both jobs alone.

Wells must help collapse the pocket while the edge rushers maintain contain. The second level has to communicate, keep its spacing and tackle when Parker steps up. Pressure, coverage and rush-lane discipline have to work together.

SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE. Make Parker earn his yards instead of giving him an open middle.

SheLovesThee matchup analysis: options for the defensive adjustment, not a confirmed JSU game plan.

The defensive reset

Disguise the pressure. Protect the intermediate middle. Assign the quarterback run fit. Wrap and finish, keep leverage against Burris and get off the field late.

Ace in the hole • bands, fans & the Vet

Florida A&M Marching 100 performing on the field

FAMU • Marching 100

The musical and cultural ace: Rattler pride, energy and a fan base that travels. Band attendance is not independently confirmed here.

Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South trombone players

JSU • Sonic Boom of the South

The homecoming soundtrack and the home crowd. Noise can challenge visiting communication and reward a fast start.

How a hostile environment affects the game

Watch silent counts, pre-snap communication, timeouts and false starts. FAMU can quiet the crowd with controlled possessions; JSU can amplify it with early stops and explosive runs. Crowd impact is a matchup angle, not a measured statistical edge.
